Titanium vs. aluminium camp cookware
Titanium is the lightest and toughest pot metal but concentrates heat into food-burning hot spots; aluminium spreads heat evenly and costs half as much. Boil-only campers should buy titanium; real cooks want hard-anodized aluminium.

Why titanium burns dinner
Titanium conducts heat poorly, so the flame's energy stays concentrated in a ring directly above the burner instead of spreading across the base. Water does not care — it circulates and evens the heat out — but rice, porridge and sauces scorch onto that ring while the edges stay lukewarm. No coating or technique fully beats the physics; stirring constantly on a low flame only softens it.
Boil-only campers: titanium wins anyway
If your camp cuisine is boiling water for dehydrated meals, coffee and instant noodles, the hot-spot problem never appears — and titanium's virtues shine: a 750 ml titanium pot weighs around 100 g, shrugs off being dropped and squeezed in a pack, and outlives every other item you own. That pot, a small stove and a 100 g canister nested inside is the definitive compact solo kit.
Real cooking: aluminium wins
Hard-anodizing hardens aluminium's surface into something scratch-resistant and easy to clean, keeping the metal's excellent, even heat conduction. Fried eggs, pancakes, actual simmered meals — this is the material that makes them possible on a tiny stove, at roughly half titanium's price and only a modest weight penalty. For two people cooking properly, a 1.2–2 L hard-anodized set beats titanium every time.
Stainless steel: the car-camping metal
Stainless is cheap, tolerates campfires and metal utensils, and lasts forever — but it is roughly twice titanium's weight for a given pot. Sensible in a car-camping box or canoe barrel; the wrong material in a carried pack.
Coatings and care
Nonstick and ceramic linings make cleanup lovely but are the fragile part of any pot: pack them with a cloth inside, stir with silicone or wood, and expect the coating — not the pot — to end the pot's life.
