Filter or purifier: what's the real difference?
The two words get used almost interchangeably in marketing, but they describe different levels of protection. The gap between them is one specific category of pathogen, and knowing which one your trip actually exposes you to is the whole decision.
What a filter actually removes
A filter works by physical size exclusion — pores small enough (typically 0.1–0.2 microns) to trap bacteria like E. coli and protozoa like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, both common causes of backcountry stomach illness. That covers essentially the entire realistic threat in backcountry water across Europe, North America, and most of the world's popular hiking regions. The one thing a filter cannot catch
Viruses are far smaller than bacteria or protozoa — small enough to pass straight through a hollow-fibre filter's pores. They are rarely present in backcountry streams and lakes in the regions most compact campers hike in, which is why a filter alone is the accepted standard for those trips. The exception is water that may carry human waste: areas with weak sanitation infrastructure, refugee-camp-adjacent water sources, or travel to regions where waterborne viral illness is common.
How a purifier closes that gap
A purifier adds a second mechanism on top of physical filtration — electroadsorption, chemical treatment, or UV light — specifically to inactivate or remove viruses too. The trade-off is real: purifiers are heavier, sometimes slower, and cost more than an equivalent filter, for protection against a threat most backcountry trips simply don't have.
So which do you actually need?
For hiking and backpacking trips in Europe, North America, and similar regions, a filter is the right and standard choice — buying purifier-level protection is spending weight and money on a risk that isn't there. Reach for a purifier specifically when travelling somewhere the water may carry human waste, which is a question about your destination, not about how remote or wild the trip feels.
