How to choose compact power and solar
A compact power setup is a small battery that covers your trip's actual charging needs, plus a solar panel only if the trip is too long for a battery alone. Start with the battery; add solar only when the maths genuinely calls for it.
How many mAh do you actually need?
A 10,000 mAh power bank gives roughly two full phone charges, which covers most weekend trips comfortably. Longer trips, or charging multiple devices — phone, headlamp, GPS communicator — want either a 20,000 mAh bank or a solar panel to top up along the way, since simply carrying a bigger battery adds weight fast at the high end.
Is a solar panel actually worth the weight?
Only past the point a power bank alone can cover, and only with real, unobstructed sun for several hours a day — tree cover or an overcast forecast can make a panel dead weight. A good power bank plus a cheap, light panel usually beats one bigger solar setup at the same total weight: the panel tops up the battery over the day, it doesn't replace carrying one.
