Sleeping pad R-value explained

R-value measures how well a sleeping pad resists heat flowing out of you into the ground. For most three-season camping you want an R-value of 3 to 4; for frosty shoulder seasons aim for 4 to 5, and on snow you want 5.5 or more.

What does R-value actually measure?

R-value is thermal resistance: how strongly the pad slows conductive heat loss between your body and the ground. Higher numbers insulate more. Since the ASTM F3340 standard was adopted in 2020, the big brands all test the same way, so a 4.2 from one maker really can be compared with a 4.5 from another. Older or no-name pads without an ASTM figure are guesswork — treat their claims with suspicion.

R-values stack

Insulation adds up. A thin foam pad (about R 2) under a three-season air pad (R 3–4) gives you roughly R 5–6, which is a cheap way to take a summer kit into winter. The foam layer also protects the air pad from punctures — a common compact-camping combination.

Why the pad matters as much as the bag

The insulation in a sleeping bag or quilt works by trapping air in its loft. Underneath you, your body weight crushes that loft flat, so the bag does almost nothing against the ground — the pad does that whole job. Ground can pull heat away far faster than still air, which is why people wake up cold at 3 a.m. on a warm-rated bag and a cheap pad. If your sleep system disappoints, upgrade the pad before the bag.

Weight and packed size

Modern insulated air pads are the compact-camper's friend: a warm (R 4+) full-length pad now weighs 350–500 g and packs to the size of a one-litre bottle. A bag's temperature rating is measured on a well-insulated pad, so the rating silently assumes you got the R-value right. Pair a winter bag with a summer pad and you have a summer sleep system with extra bulk.

Is ASTM F3340 important?
Yes, it is the reason R-values are comparable at all. Before the ASTM F3340 standard was adopted across the industry in 2020, every brand tested its own way and the numbers were marketing. Now the major makers test identically, so 4.2 from one brand really can be compared against 4.5 from another. A pad quoting an R-value with no ASTM testing behind it — typical of no-name pads — is an unverified claim, not a measurement.
How does R-value work on a foam pad specifically?
A foam pad insulates with the air trapped in its closed cells, so its R-value comes from thickness and cell structure rather than from a chamber of air you inflate. That makes it immune to punctures and to losing warmth if it deflates, but it also caps it low: most closed-cell foam pads land around R 2, and getting past that means uncomfortable bulk. Foam is why the pad is indestructible and why it is not warm enough on its own in winter.
Can an R-value be too high?
Practically, no — you cannot overheat from below the way you can inside too warm a bag, because you can always vent the top. The real costs of a high R-value are weight, packed size and price. A hot sleeper still needs the same R-value as anyone else, because R-value fights the ground, not your metabolism; the place to save is the bag or quilt rating, not the pad.
Does a pad lose R-value over time?
Slowly, and mostly from damage rather than age. Closed-cell foam compresses permanently over years of use, which thins it and costs a little insulation. Air pads keep their rating as long as the internal baffles and reflective layers are intact and the pad holds pressure — but an air pad that is half deflated has lost most of its R-value, because the insulating structure only works at proper pressure. Underinflating a pad on purpose for comfort is a common and cold mistake.
