Freestanding vs. trekking-pole tents
A freestanding tent stands on its own dedicated poles; a trekking-pole tent borrows the poles you already carry and saves 300-600 g. The right answer depends on where you pitch and whether you actually hike with poles.
The three families
Freestanding tents have a pole skeleton that holds full shape before a single stake goes in. Semi-freestanding tents stand on their poles but need two or three stakes to open the foot end. Trekking-pole tents have no tent poles at all: one or two hiking poles prop up a staked-out fabric shape, so every part of the structure is load-bearing fabric and tension.
Weight and packed size
Dedicated poles are typically 300–600 g plus their bulk in the pack. If poles are already in your hands all day, a trekking-pole shelter gets you a two-person tent under one kilogram — numbers a freestanding design cannot reach. If you do not hike with poles, the maths collapses: carrying trekking poles only to pitch a tent is just poles by another name. If you do hike with them, check the shelter's stated pitch height against your pair first: whether your poles are fixed or adjustable decides whether that number is something you can set.
Where you pitch decides more than grams
Trekking-pole tents live and die by stake placement: they want ground that holds a stake and enough space for guylines. Wooden platforms, rock slabs, gravel pads and loose sand all fight them (workarounds exist — rocks, sand anchors — but they cost time and patience). A freestanding tent pitches on anything, can be picked up and moved to shake out dirt, and forgives a cramped site. Campground-hoppers and alpine-rock campers feel that freedom constantly.
Ease, speed and storm behaviour
Freestanding pitching is nearly foolproof from the first night. A trekking-pole tent has a learning curve: getting the tension right takes a few pitches, and a sloppy pitch sags in wind and rain. Mastered, though, a well-guyed trekking-pole shelter in good ground is impressively storm-solid — tension is structure. Budget one garden practice session before the first real trip.
Condensation and space
Many trekking-pole shelters are single-wall to hit their weight, which concentrates breath moisture on the one layer around you; site choice and venting matter more — see why condensation is not a leak.
