Tent waterproof ratings: hydrostatic head explained

Hydrostatic head is the height of a water column a fabric holds back before it leaks, measured in millimetres. A 1,500 mm fly handles sustained rain; floors want 3,000 mm or more because knees and elbows press water through.

How is a tent's waterproof rating measured?

Imagine a vertical tube standing on the fabric, slowly filled with water. The millimetre reading when water first forces through is the hydrostatic head. It measures pressure resistance, which is why the same rain can be irrelevant to one part of a tent and a problem for another: pressure, not wetness, is what pushes water through fabric.

Fly ratings in practice

Rain lands on a fly at very low pressure, so modest numbers already work: 1,200–1,500 mm keeps out sustained rain, and 2,000–3,000 mm adds margin for wind-driven storms and long trips as coatings age. Chasing 5,000 mm on a fly mostly buys extra coating weight — the opposite of compact. Lightweight silicone-coated fabrics also tend to hold their rating far longer than budget polyurethane coatings, which stiffen and fail with UV and years.

Floors are the real pressure test

Your knee on a groundsheet concentrates your body weight on a few square centimetres — orders of magnitude more pressure than rainfall. That is why floors need 3,000 mm and up, and why a worn floor leaks under your hip while the fly is still fine. On soggy pitches a thin groundsheet under the tent extends floor life cheaply (at ~100 g of pack weight).

Seams, zips and pitch beat raw numbers

Most "my tent leaks" stories are not fabric failures. Untaped seams, a fly touching the inner, a puddle-shaped pitch site, or gear pressed against the wall all move water inside regardless of rating. Check that seams are factory-taped (or seam-sealed on silnylon), pitch the fly taut, and keep bags off the walls — that discipline outperforms another thousand millimetres of rating.

Condensation is not a leak

Waking to a wet inner wall usually means your own breath condensed on cold fabric, not rain coming through. One person exhales roughly a quarter litre of water per night. Ventilation — cracked doors, high vents, not pitching in a windless hollow beside water — is the cure; more hydrostatic head does nothing for it. Single-wall and trekking-pole tents need the most airflow attention.

What to look for when buying
