Shoulder season and winter: what has to change
Summer gear does not fail gradually as it gets colder; specific parts of it fail at specific points, and mostly in an order people do not expect. The bag is rarely the first thing to go.
What fails first when it gets cold?
The sleeping pad. Almost always, and it is the most misdiagnosed problem in camping. Underneath you, the insulation in a sleeping bag is compressed flat and does essentially nothing — so the only thing between you and the ground is the pad. The ground conducts heat away far faster than still air does, which is why a cold night feels like it is coming from below, because it is.
The consequence is that people buy a warmer bag, sleep cold again, and conclude the new bag is faulty. The number that actually governs this is R-value.
How much R-value do you actually need?
As a working guide: an R-value around 2 is summer, around 3–4 covers most shoulder-season nights, and 5 or above is what winter and freezing ground ask for. The R-value guide breaks this down by season properly.
The useful trick is that R-values stack. A closed-cell foam pad under an inflatable adds its rating to the total, costs very little, weighs a few hundred grams, and gives you a pad that still insulates if the inflatable punctures. What temperature rating do you actually need?
Sleeping bag labels usually carry three numbers, and the one people read is the wrong one. Comfort is the temperature at which a cold sleeper sleeps comfortably; limit is where a warm sleeper is at the edge of it; extreme is a survival figure and is not a camping rating at all.
Buy on comfort, not on the headline number, and give yourself margin — the ratings assume you are on an adequate pad, wearing a base layer, and not already cold when you get in. What the three numbers mean covers the detail.
Fill type matters more in the cold too. Down has the better warmth-to-weight ratio but loses almost all of it when damp, and cold weather means condensation; synthetic keeps insulating wet. That trade is in down versus synthetic.
What changes about the tent?
Condensation becomes the main problem rather than rain. Warm, damp air from your breath meets a cold flysheet and condenses, and in a poorly ventilated tent that lands back on your bag — where, if it is a down bag, it costs you real warmth. Ventilation in winter feels counterintuitive and matters more, not less.
The other change is pitching. Frozen or snow-covered ground holds pegs badly, which shifts the balance toward freestanding designs that stand up before they are staked. Three-season tents with large mesh panels also lose more heat and let spindrift in; that is the real distinction behind "3-season" and "4-season" labelling.
What changes about the stove?
This one surprises people every autumn: canister gas loses pressure as it gets colder. The fuel has to vaporise to burn, and its vapour pressure falls with temperature — so a canister that ran fine in July produces a weak flame near freezing, and the effect gets worse as the canister empties.
Three things help. Choose canisters with a higher isobutane or propane content rather than plain butane, which essentially stops working around freezing. Keep the canister warm — inside a jacket before use, never on frozen ground. And note that this is one of the clearest arguments for a particular stove type: integrated systems with a regulator hold performance further down the range, and remote-canister stoves can run the canister inverted to feed liquid fuel. What about batteries and light?
Two compounding problems. Nights are much longer, so headlamp runtime that was ample in June is not, and lithium-ion cells lose usable capacity in the cold — a power bank rated for several phone charges delivers noticeably fewer near freezing.
The practical answers are to keep batteries and power banks in an inside pocket or in your sleeping bag overnight, and to budget more capacity than the arithmetic suggests. The order to fix things in
If you are extending a summer kit into colder weather, spend in this order: pad first (or add a foam pad under the one you have), then the bag's comfort rating, then fuel type and quantity, then batteries. Tents come last for most people — a decent three-season tent handles far more cold than its name suggests, as long as you ventilate it.
