Rechargeable or replaceable headlamp batteries?
This is separate from brightness. A 600-lumen headlamp is useless on night three if it has no power left and no way to refill it — how it takes power matters as much as how much light it makes.
Rechargeable: lighter, cheaper to run, needs a power source
A USB-rechargeable headlamp like the Nitecore NU25 (50 g) or the BioLite HeadLamp 425 (75 g) is lighter than an equivalent AAA model, because it skips the battery compartment and contacts that replaceable cells need. It costs nothing per charge once you own it, and tops up from the same power bank or solar panel you might already carry for a phone. The catch is obvious but easy to forget on a longer trip: no power source, no light — and unlike a AAA headlamp, you cannot buy a fresh charge at a village shop.
Replaceable: heavier, but rescuable anywhere
A headlamp that takes AAA (or occasionally AA) cells is typically a little heavier for the same brightness, and running cost adds up if you buy disposables. What it buys back is a genuine fallback: dead batteries can be swapped for fresh ones bought in almost any shop, anywhere, with zero electricity required. For weekend and USB-friendly trips where a power bank is already in the bag, rechargeable wins outright. For long remote trips with no realistic recharging opportunity, replaceable cells — or a rechargeable model that also accepts AAA as a backup — are the safer call.
The lithium rule people get backwards
Spare lithium cells and power banks must go in carry-on, never in checked baggage — the opposite direction from sharp items, and the single rule travellers mix up most on this topic. What actually drains a headlamp fast
Brightness, not the battery chemistry, is what empties either type fastest. A headlamp run at its maximum output — 400, 600 lumens or more — drains in a couple of hours regardless of whether the cell is rechargeable or replaceable. On a mid setting, look for 5–10 hours per charge or per set of cells, which covers several normal nights of camp use. Verdict
Rechargeable is the right default for the vast majority of trips — weekends, USB-friendly travel, anywhere a power bank is already coming along.
