How many lumens does a headlamp need?

For cooking and camp chores, 30-100 lumens is plenty; night hiking wants 200-300. The max-lumen number on the box matters less than beam shape and how long the lamp actually holds its brightness.

What is a lumen, and what does the box not tell you?

Lumens measure total light output. Reputable brands test to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard, which at least makes numbers comparable — but the headline figure is almost always a burst mode the lamp can only hold for minutes before stepping down to protect the battery. The number that shapes your night is the sustained output, buried in the spec table.

Most camping nights are spent under 100 lumens. A lamp whose sustained output covers 150–300 handles everything a normal trip throws at it.

Beam shape beats raw power

A flood beam spreads light widely for close work — cooking without turning your head like a lighthouse. A spot beam throws a tight cone far down the trail. For camping, flood-biased or mixed beams win; a 1,000-lumen pure spot is worse in a cook pot than an 80-lumen flood. The best compact lamps let you switch or blend the two.

Runtime honesty

Read runtime claims with FL1 in mind: many are measured until output falls to a moonlight-grade trickle, not until useful light ends. Look for regulated output (constant brightness, then a warned drop) over unregulated (slow fade from first minute), and for a spec that states hours at a stated lumen level. A red-light mode is worth having: it preserves night vision and spares tent mates.

Batteries and weight

Rechargeable lamps are cheapest to run; on longer trips a lamp that also accepts AAA cells adds a fallback you can buy in any village.
